  • Resumen: Abstract: Material finishes (faux finishes) suggest questions of design, value, and use by authoring new materialities that condition the spaces they construct and complicate the limits that divide humans and objects. This text aims to explore the problems and questions that result from taxonomizing material finishes and its multiple ways in which these are produced and circulate. It studies how they acquire different meanings and cultural markers, what their ideal lives are, how they are used and valued and ultimately, how they change our perception of the world. The text builds a thread of inquiries, through the analysis of a selection of specific materials and its range of products in the market, customer reviews and advertisement. Starting with the reconfiguration of wood and the commoditization of nature, the analysis moves into exploring how these products redefine the density of walls to examine what things are made of and how labor is valued. This is followed then by a discussion on how materiality becomes liquid, specifically through the case of spray paints and escenses, and a reconsideration of surface as a place of depth and meaning. The last section lays out problems of how these become generic and universal ways of construction that code spaces.
